Footwork Drills... PDF Print E-mail
1. Lateral First Step

This drill trains the explosive first step tennis players utilise when running to wide balls. It also emphasises the use of adjustment steps around the ball.

Aim: 12 times around the cones in 30 seconds

Repeat: 3 times

2. Forward First Step

This drill trains the explosive first step forward to track down a drop shot. It is a simple but effective drill, which emphasises the split step followed by the dynamic move.

Aim: 12 times around the cones in 30 seconds

Repeat: 3 times

3. Forehand Repeats

This drill works on cutting in on both the forehand and the backhand sides. A cone is placed on the inside tramline and the player must simulate a shot and get back to the middle as many times as possible using the mogul step.

Aim: 10 times

Repeat: 3 times

4. The Clock

The clock is a great drill for training multi directional first step speed. As the player splits in the center of the clock, the coach calls a number corresponding to numbers on the clock and the player explosively moves to that number, using the correct footwork pattern.

Repeat: 3 times 30 seconds

5. The 8 Shot Grid

This is a training drill which incorporates all of the basic footwork patterns in baseline play. A player can use this grid to shadow the split, mogul, power, hop through and drop steps as described in our cutting edge section until they are performed with perfect balance and perfect foot placements.

Repeat: 5 times
